Saturday November 4th saw USBC take on their first Head race of the season. Kingston small boats Head is a 5.3km race setting off from Hampton court palace and concluding just beyond Kingston Rowing club. USBC had crews in both Division 1 and 2 and made their mark in both. Our top women’s 4+ entered Division 1 in the IM2 category and raced well, coming home in a winning time of 20:53.0 and placing 40th overall. Well done to each of the girls, Hattie Case at stroke, Megan Pearson at 3, Sophie Hossack at 2, Maddie Gardner in bow and Tsolo Swan in the coxing seat.
Division 1 also played host to our women’s double of Naomi Coleman and Lizzie MacCann who raced in the novice category. Both girls are balancing a challenging year of placements and rowing yet displayed some great sculling and perseverance. They came 3rd in their category and learnt a lot from the experience.
That concluded the morning activities but division 2 saw the debut of our new men’s squad. With Giovanni Morescalchi at stroke, Ludovico Iannizzotto Venezze at 3, Tom Rollins at 2 and Charlie Collins in the bow seat the boys raced hard which led them to place 14th overall in the division. Also making his debut representing USBC was Yaroslav who took on the IM1 1x category. He dealt with the challenge head on and walked away having learnt a lot from the experience.
Next up in Division 2 we saw another win from our women’s squad as our 2nd women’s 4+ raced in the IM3 category. As the crew reached Kingston Bridge they overtook 2 crews in their category and came away with the win in a time of 21:42.5. Our women’s squad currently hold the titles in Women’s IM24+, IM34+ and NOV4+ at the head.
Last but certainly not least we saw Megs Moloney take on the Nov1x category for the first time. With 16 people in her category and some tough opposition Megs came top 5 in the Nov1x. Her approach to Kingston Bridge was epic as she charged on to try to overtake 3 different crews.
USBC took on Kingston Small Boats Head and walked away with more racing experience and a few more medals, a great way to start the season.
